Southern California Bike Expo
April 2–4, 2004
Los Angeles, CA

Bike Expos are great opportunities for checking out new bikes and components, and the SoCal Bike Expo was no exception. Held in the LA Convention Center, the show features an indoor dirt “single track” on which riders can test a whole slew of bikes in one place—nice if you’re in the market for a new ride, or if you just really dig bikes.

“Something fun for everyone” is the motto of the show, and whether you were shopping for product or just wanted to watch some trials or jumping, you were in luck. The Wells Fargo Home Mortgage Kid’s Ride and the Volvo City of Angels Fun Ride brought the festivities out of the convention center and into the streets. Although I personally didn’t participate in the Kid’s Ride (for obvious reasons), Maurice and I got the chance to do the 40 mile fun ride thanks to Mikey’s gallantry in opening up the booth Saturday morning (he even remembered daylight savings and got there pretty much on time!).

The ride was an awesome way to check out the city; from the convention center, the ride hit more than 60 spots of interest in surrounding areas—Disney Studios, The Chinese Theater, The Hollywood Bowl, Griffith Park and the Tiki Ti Bar (Steve Boehmke’s favorite LA drink spot), to name just a few. Hundreds of riders took to the city streets, with much appreciated help from the many escorts from the LAPD. An awesome ride, and together with the day-long expo, truly an organizational nightmare (the effort) and masterpiece (the result) by event promoter, Peter Heumann.

Inside the venue proper, we had the chance to chat with lots of people, answering the question, “So, what’s Dirt Rag?” for hours on end. Since it’s our mission in life to spread the faith, the SoCal Bike Expo gave us plenty to work with. Maurice and Mikey even got the chance to chase down actor James Spader to give him the copy of Dirt Rag that he unwittingly glanced at but put back down at the booth.

Hearty thanks to Hutchinson, our World Tour sponsor for the event, for providing some awesome 2005 Scorpion tires that many people just couldn’t pass up. And, a special secret handshake to the guys at the Kona booth for representing with flair.
